FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know About Guitar Lessons at PlayPro

How are lessons personalized at PlayPro?

During your free consultation, Jan will discuss your goals, musical interests, experience level, and learning style. From there, he designs custom lessons specifically for you — not from a textbook, but built around what YOU want to achieve. As you progress, your lessons evolve. No two students get the same curriculum.

Do I need to own a guitar to start lessons?

While Jan has instruments available during lessons, you'll want your own guitar for home practice. Jan can help you choose the right guitar for your needs and budget during your consultation. Practice at home is essential for progress!

What if I've never played an instrument before?

Perfect! Many students are complete beginners. Jan will teach you everything from how to hold the guitar to playing your first song. No experience necessary.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

Jan understands life happens! He offers flexible rescheduling with 24-hour notice.

What if I have arthritis?

Not a problem! Jan has worked with many students with arthritis. He'll show you modified chord fingerings, recommend appropriately-sized guitars, suggest lighter-gauge strings, and adapt techniques to work for your hands.

Are there any recitals or performances?

Performance opportunities are available for students who are interested, but never required. Jan focuses on making sure you enjoy the learning process, whether or not you want to perform publicly.

How long are lessons?

Standard lessons are 60 minutes depending on your preference and goals. Jan will help you choose the best option during your free consultation.

What styles of music do you teach?

All styles! Pop, rock, classical, folk, blues, country, fingerstyle, jazz, metal, flamenco, and more. During your consultation, you'll talk about what music you love, and Jan will tailor lessons to those styles.

What instruments do you teach besides guitar?

Jan teaches acoustic guitar, classical guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, and ukulele. He also offers music theory, composition, and film score/production lessons. You can focus on one instrument or explore multiple areas — it's completely customized to your interests.

How often should I take lessons?

Most students benefit from weekly lessons for consistent progress and accountability. However, bi-weekly options are also available for students with busy schedules.

I'm left-handed. Can I still learn guitar?

Absolutely! You can either play left-handed guitar (strung for lefties) or learn to play standard right-handed guitar — many left-handed people do both successfully. Jan has taught many left-handed students over 35+ years and will help you choose the approach that feels most natural and comfortable for you.

How much should I practice between lessons?

For beginners, 15-30 minutes per day, 4-5 days per week is ideal. The key is consistency, not marathon sessions. Jan will teach you how to practice effectively so your time isn't wasted.

What if I'm "too old" or "not musical enough"?

You're neither! Jan teaches students from ages 8 to their 80s. With the right teacher and personalized approach, anyone can learn guitar. Age and natural "talent" are not barriers.

Still have questions? Let's talk! Book a free consultation and Jan will answer everything.

THE HEART BEHIND PLAYPRO GUITAR SCHOOL

Hi, I'm Jan. For over 35 years, I've taught hundreds of students across Southern California — from excited kids to busy professionals to active retirees discovering music's transformative power.

My Teaching Philosophy:

What I've learned over 35+ is this: the best teaching isn't about forcing students through a rigid curriculum. It's about meeting each person where they are, understanding what inspires them, and creating a personalized path that keeps them excited about music.

What Our Students Say

I've never played an instrument or had a music lesson. At 74 years old I decided I wanted to play the guitar. I Googled Jan he breaks music down so that I understood melody, harmony and rhythm. He is very patient and answers all of my questions. He not only teaches guitar playing but he also composes music. I've recommended him to friends who are accomplished musicians and they have been very impressed.

Tony A.

I have been trying to play classical guitar since I was a college student in the seventies. I have tried other instructors as well as online courses. Nothing has enabled me to feel confident, so I paused my seeking of a competent instructor who really gets me. To summarize Jan has caused me to want to practice daily as I am now for the first time confident that I will learn to play! He has adapted his style to my needs, what more can you ask of an instructor

Harlen A.

I have been a musician as a drummer for over 60 years. I have had 4 guitar instructors. Jan is helping my guitar more than the other instructors. His teaching style is concise and comprehensive. He provides guitar tablature and the music. He is a great guy and is a true professional.

Bill S.

Juan (Jan) is a great guitar player who's constantly finding creative ways of inspiring his students, he's been so helpful in understanding music and making it fun.

Alexix G.

Jan Parra is a great teacher for me. He teaches guitar very professionally and patiently. He chose music that suited my situation and that I liked. This makes me happy and confident about learning guitar.
